Simply put, virtualization is an idea whose time has come.
The term virtualization broadly describes the separation of a resource or request for a service from the underlying physical delivery of that service. With virtual memory, for example, computer software gains access to more memory than is physically installed, via the background swapping of data to disk storage. Similarly, virtualization techniques can be applied to other IT infrastructure layers - including networks, storage, laptop or server hardware, operating systems and applications.
This blend of virtualization technologies - or virtual infrastruc- ture - provides a layer of abstraction between computing, storage and networking hardware, and the applications running on it (see Figure 1). The deployment of virtual infrastructure is non-disruptive, since the user experiences are largely unchanged. However, virtual infrastructure gives administrators the advantage of managing pooled resources across the enter- prise, allowing IT managers to be more responsive to dynamic organizational needs and to better leverage infrastructure investments.
VMware Features
As per the customers requirement of Essentials Plus Kit which; allows the customer to have 3 Servers with up to 2 processors each as mentioned in the above image.
Above mentioned Features are also at the customers disposal:
1. Vmotion
2. High Availability
Vmotion:
Vmotion allows the customer to have no downtime to their virtual machines in case of managed downtime. For example, if there is a physical fault in one of the physical servers then the customer can move their Virtual machines from one host to another host available in the cluster and can bring the faulty server down without any issues.
VMware HA:
This feature provides protection against any unmanaged down time. For example, if the Physical server has a failure of a processor or a Hard disk then the virtual machines are RESTARTED from one host to another and the downtime will be there for the window the virtual machines takes to restart.
Solution Overview:
There are 2 IBM Servers and 1 IBM storage, included in the solution that will be configured as per the image shown below:
The storage will be configured with ISCSI connections and the Servers will be connected as shown in the image above.
The Real IP Address details for the setup will be given once the setup is done but for this documentation a Test environment IP’s are given.
Storage MGMT= 192.168.1.1
Storage ISCSI CTRL 1 = 192.168.1.2
Storage ISCSI CTRL 2 = 192.168.1.3
HOST 1 CTRL 1 = 192.168.1.4
HOST 1 CTRL 2 = 192.168.1.5
HOST 2 CTRL 1 = 192.168.1.6
HOST2 CTRL 2 = 192.168.1.7
STORAGE Setup:
The IBM Storage will be configured with 1 Big LUN as per the best practices from the vendor so that the virtual machines can be created flawlessly without any intervention required by the vendor at a later stage after the Hand over of the project to the customer.
The Original Configuration of the Storage will be handed over after the Handover is done to the customer.
Conclusion:
1. The project will be providing the customer the features that are mentioned already in this documentation.
2. The Customer will be given a document at the Stage of initial configuration with which the customer can check the functionality of the product and then sign the document stating that the testing is working fine and Finally moving their production environment to the servers.
3. The customer has to provide access to the site Administrator who has the Active directory passwords and access to network resources.
4. The project will be completed in 1 week.
